I've been reading Z's ex girlfriend Helen Jane's website for a few years now, even though I've never met her. She lives in wine country and has an interesting life. I pretty much like anyone who has a blog and updates it frequently. Especially if it has to do with cooking, wonky and fun activities or crafts. She fits the bill. Right now, HJ is going through the alphabet, writing a letter to her fetus (she is also expecting) using three words that start with that letter each day. It is really beautiful and wise. If you have time, you should read it here. I learned a few things and I am 31.
When I was driving to work this morning I started crying listening to the Samples. I dragged my old "MB's Best Of" mix this morning and was saddened by the words to "World of Machines." The song is about the rise of the machine age and loss of nature. It hits me in much the same way as "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot." Mike always laughs at me, because he thinks I am sort of glass half empty when it comes to humans and the ability to take care of our earth in the proper way. He doesn't even believe the theory that the polar ice caps are melting! (As an aside, we are going to try cloth diapering for the first two months of peanut's life. Little did Mike know he was marrying a pseudo earth mama... )
As a soon to be parent, I am extra concerned about what we will leave for future generations. This got me thinking about ideas that I want to express to our son. So as an homage to HJ, I am going to try to express a few words to Peanut each week going forward of things I want him to know. I would like to make a little book out of it. I wish this was my own idea, but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?
I am splitting a gift certificate with Mike tomorrow, and we are camping out at the spa for some hour-long treatments. Work has been really hard on Mr. MBRox lately and he needs a little kneading and noodling by the pool on a gorgeous (hopefully) spring day.
